Ever
wonder how bad a TV show has to be to be rejected by Fox? Then check out Heat
Vision and Jack, the 1999 pilot written by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab, directed
by Ben Stiller.
The premise? A former astronaut (played by Jack Black) whose accident takes him too close to the sun and makes him the world's smartest man is aided by a talking motorcycle called Heat Vision with the mind of Jack's unemployed roommate (voiced by Owen Wilson) as they evade NASA and the evil Ron Silver (as himself).
Luckily, this pilot is bad in a good way with plenty of campy humor and downright silliness. Apparently Fox had no idea of the potential talent they could have had in Stiller, Black and Wilson - all of which have gone on to successful film careers; as well as the writers Harmon and Schrab who have since created the popular Channel101.com.
Look for cameos by Ben Stiller, his wife Christine Taylor and the late, great Vincent Schiavelli in the hilarious full length video of this failed television pilot at YouTube.com. You can also read the story behind HV&J as well as read scripts and view interviews with the creators over at RobSchrab.com.
